Veteran South African batter Faf du Plessis has been appointed as the vice-captain of Delhi Capitals (DC) for the IPL 2025 season, strengthening the team’s leadership group alongside captain Axar Patel. The franchise officially announced the decision via social media on Monday.
In a video shared by DC, du Plessis expressed his enthusiasm about the new role. “You mean right now? I’m at home, where else would I be? Yes, that’s true, I’m vice-captain of DC, and I’m very excited. Delhi has been fantastic, the boys have been great, and I’m feeling happy and ready,” he stated.

Delhi Capitals Secure Experienced Faf du Plessis
Du Plessis joined Delhi Capitals for INR 2 crore during the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, after being released by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). His appointment as vice-captain confirms his integral role in DC’s squad, where he will assist Axar Patel in both tactical decisions and leadership responsibilities.

With extensive leadership experience, du Plessis previously captained South Africa in international cricket and led RCB from 2022 to 2024. During his tenure at RCB, he captained in 42 matches, securing 21 wins and 21 losses, maintaining a balanced win-loss ratio of 1.000.
Under his leadership, RCB made it to the playoffs twice but were eliminated in the Eliminator stage on both occasions. Over the past five IPL seasons, du Plessis has been a consistent performer, amassing 2,718 runs in 74 innings.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2025 season against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 24. The franchise continues its quest for its first-ever IPL title, a feat yet to be achieved by PBKS and RCB as well.
