Shashank Singh, Punjab Kings’ middle-order batter, has expressed his desire to play under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. The 33-year-old all-rounder considers Rohit his “dream captain” due to his supportive approach and tactical acumen. He admires Rohit’s ability to back his players, keep the environment relaxed, and maintain strong connections with teammates through his on-field banter.
Shashank, who delivered impactful performances for Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, recalled sharing the crease with Rohit during domestic cricket.
“Everyone says that he [Rohit] backs his players to the hilt; gives them plenty of chances. He is a very smart captain. His one-liners (on the field) are also quite funny. If you ask me one captain I would want to play under, it will be Rohit Sharma,” Shashank said on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel.
“He is from Bombay. I have also batted with him once. He was not the captain back then. I want to play under his leadership, that’s my wish,” he added.

Meanwhile, in IPL 2025, Shashank Singh will play under Shreyas Iyer, the newly appointed Punjab Kings skipper. His IPL journey took an unexpected turn in 2024 when Punjab Kings acquired him for INR 20 lakh. Initially, confusion surrounded his selection during the accelerated auction round, but the franchise later clarified that he was always part of their plans.
Despite the unusual start, Shashank emerged as Punjab Kings’ top performer, scoring 354 runs in 14 matches at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 164.65. His impact secured him retention ahead of IPL 2025, making him one of just two players retained. His new contract now stands at INR 5.50 crore.
