Sourav Ganguly is surprised by Rohit Sharma’s Test struggles over the past few years and believes he must improve, especially with the England series ahead.
Sourav Ganguly has raised concerns about Rohit Sharma’s inconsistent Test performances over the past four to five years. The former India captain believes Rohit has the talent to perform much better in red-ball cricket but has not lived up to expectations.
India played 10 Tests in the last five months against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, winning only three. Rohit’s form has been under scrutiny, especially in the last four months.
With a five-match Test series against England approaching, Ganguly emphasized the need for Rohit to step up. He noted that the conditions would be challenging, with seam and swing playing a crucial role.
“What has surprised me is his form in red ball over the last 4-5 years. A player of his stature and ability, can do much better than what he has done. He must put on his thinking cap because we have 5 Tests against England and that’s going to be another hard series,” Ganguly said to RevSportz.
“Just like the way it was in Australia. It’s going to seam; it’s going to swing. India need him to perform in the red ball but in white ball, he is one of the greatest ever,” he added.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma’s Champions Trophy win has strengthened his position, making him a strong contender to lead India in the upcoming Test series in England. However, Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee have yet to finalize their decision. Reports suggest there is no clear decision on his leadership, with concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness and a lack of standout captaincy alternatives among younger players. Rohit’s Test record in England includes 524 runs in seven matches at an average of 40.3, with just one century.
