The BCCI has reportedly scrapped automatic match bans for captains due to slow over-rates in IPL 2025 and will now impose demerit points, with bans only in extreme cases.
The BCCI has reportedly modified the playing conditions for IPL 2025, reducing the severity of over-rate penalties. Captains will no longer face automatic match bans for slow over-rates, a rule that previously impacted players like Rishabh Pant in 2024 and will keep Hardik Pandya out of Mumbai Indians’ opening match this season.
According to reports from Cricbuzz, instead of immediate suspensions, captains will now receive demerit points for over-rate offenses. A ban will only be imposed in extreme cases. The new system follows a model similar to the ICC’s. Demerit points will remain on record for three years, with penalties enforced once a player accumulates four points. These could result in either a full match fee deduction or further disciplinary actions.
“For every 4 demerit points accumulated, the match referee can impose a penalty, either in the form of a 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. These demerit points could potentially lead to a match ban in the future,” Cricbuzz quoted a source as saying.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has reportedly also introduced multiple rule changes ahead of IPL 2025. A second ball will now be available after the 11th over of the second innings in evening matches to counteract dew. The ban on using saliva to shine the ball has also been lifted, giving bowlers more assistance in a format dominated by batters. Additionally, teams can now use DRS to review height-based wides and deliveries outside the off-stump.
