Virender Sehwag felt Shubman Gill’s captaincy lacked readiness and proactiveness in Gujarat Titans’ 11-run loss to Punjab Kings.
Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag expressed disappointment over Shubman Gill’s captaincy in Gujarat Titans’ (GT) clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday. He felt that Gill’s lack of readiness and poor decision-making cost Gujarat the match in Ahmedabad.
Gujarat opted to bowl first at their home venue but faced a brutal assault from Punjab’s batters. Sehwag criticized Gill for his ineffective bowling changes, especially for removing Mohammed Siraj from the attack too early during the powerplay.
“I thought that Shubman Gill’s captaincy wasn’t up to the mark, he wasn’t ready, he wasn’t proactive. When Siraj was bowling well, he brought on Arshad Khan, who I think conceded 21 runs in the powerplay and that over changed the momentum,” Sehwag said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

Sehwag further questioned Gill’s strategy of holding back Siraj for the death overs, which backfired. “If Siraj is bowling well with the new ball, there is no point holding him back for the death overs and you see he also got hit in the end,” Sehwag added.
Siraj, making his debut for Gujarat, had conceded only 14 runs in his first two overs. However, instead of continuing his spell, Gill brought in medium-pacer Arshad Khan, who struggled under pressure. Despite finding some swing, Arshad was taken apart by Punjab opener Priyansh Arya, who smashed four boundaries in the over, shifting the momentum in Punjab’s favour.
