Sanjay Manjrekar joked that Glenn Maxwell plays well as rarely as Halley’s Comet appears, highlighting his inconsistent IPL form.
Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar compared Glenn Maxwell’s inconsistent IPL form to the rare appearance of Halley’s Comet. His comment followed Maxwell’s 21-ball 30-run knock for Punjab Kings against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday. Despite Maxwell’s brief effort, PBKS fell short by 50 runs while chasing 206.
Maxwell was signed by Punjab for ₹4.2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega-auction, marking his third stint with the franchise. He came to the crease during the seventh over after a poor start by the top order. Manjrekar pointed out that although Maxwell is known for his talent, he rarely delivers impactful performances regularly across IPL seasons.
“Halley’s Comet orbits the sun and is visible from Earth once every 75 years. Just like that, Glenn Maxwell plays one good match in 75 games. It was last seen in 1986, and it will now be spotted in 2061,” Manjrekar said while speaking on JioHotstar.
“It’s the same case with Maxwell in batting. Glenn Maxwell is Halley’s Comet of Cricket,” he added.
Glenn Maxwell has delivered mixed results with the bat in the IPL between 2014 and 2024. In 10 seasons where he played at least 10 matches, he crossed 300 runs in five editions. He averaged over 30 in four of those seasons—2014, 2017, 2021, and 2023. In 2022, he maintained an average above 27. However, Maxwell struggled in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2024, scoring under 180 runs with averages below 20. His performances have often fluctuated despite being one of the most aggressive players in the format.
However, while his batting form has remained inconsistent, Maxwell has continued to add value with his off-spin and sharp fielding. His contributions with the ball and in the field have offered balance to his teams even during underwhelming batting seasons.
