Gujarat Titans Replace Injured Glenn Phillips With Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka For IPL 2025

Gujarat Titans brought back Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for injured New Zealand cricketer Glenn Phillips in IPL 2025.

The Gujarat Titans (GT) have announced the return of Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a groin injury.

Shanaka, who previously featured for GT in IPL 2023, has been signed for Rs 75 lakh. Though his earlier stint included just three matches with 26 runs and no bowling, the 32-year-old brings international experience and recent form, which could be valuable for a Titans squad seeking consistency this season.

This marks Shanaka’s second appearance in the IPL, both with the Titans. Under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy in 2023, his opportunities were limited. However, with Shubman Gill now leading the side, the Sri Lankan is expected to have a more prominent role, particularly in stabilising the middle order.

Phillips, bought by GT for Rs 2 crore, did not play any match in IPL 2025 before being ruled out. Despite his reputation as a powerful hitter and handy off-spinner, he remained on the bench, with Sherfane Rutherford preferred in the playing XI. Phillips did feature occasionally as a substitute fielder.

Shanaka joins the Titans on the back of a successful ILT20 campaign with Dubai Capitals, where he scored 164 runs and took four wickets in 10 matches, playing a key role in their title win. He also participated in Sri Lanka’s domestic red-ball tournaments after the ILT20, showing his all-round commitment to the game.
