Yograj Singh claimed Arjun Tendulkar could become the next Chris Gayle under Yuvraj Singh’s guidance.
Former India cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, Yograj Singh, made a strong statement about Arjun Tendulkar’s batting skills, claiming the youngster could emerge as the “next Chris Gayle” if trained by his son.
Arjun, the son of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, is yet to play a match for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. The left-arm all-rounder, who switched to Goa in domestic cricket, has trained under Yograj’s watch in recent years.
“With regard to Arjun, I said, focus less on his bowling and more on his batting. But if Yuvraj – he and Sachin are so close – takes Sachin’s son under his wings for three months, I bet he will become the next Chris Gayle. Often it happens that a fast bowler, if they undergo a stress fracture, cannot bowl as effectively. I think that Arjun should be handed over to Yuvraj for a while,” Yograj told CricketNext.

Yograj also recalled an incident from Abhishek Sharma’s early cricketing days, where the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) saw him only as a bowler. “We had asked a list of Abhishek Sharma’s performances from the PCA and the coaches. Do you know what they said? ‘Sir, he is a bowler. He bowls’. Yuvi said, ‘You just look at his performance records.’ So, when we saw the record, Abhishek already had 24 hundreds. Yuvi said, ‘Why are you giving wrong information? Why? This man has made 24 centuries’. This was six or seven years ago,” Yograj was quoted as saying by News18 Punjab.

He continued, “And when Yuvi sent that record to me, he said, ‘Papa, look at this player.’ I said, ‘Look, this is all about sharing information. This is the problem; some people want to finish the player out of jealousy instead of making their own career.'”
Arjun was picked up by Mumbai Indians in 2021, but he missed that season due to injury. He made his IPL debut in 2023 and has played five matches so far. Most recently, he represented Goa in the 2024–25 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
