Delhi Capitals suffered their first loss of IPL 2025 after a late collapse and an over-rate violation for Axar Patel against Mumbai Indians.
Delhi Capitals’ unbeaten run in IPL 2025 came to an end on Sunday evening as they fell short by 12 runs against Mumbai Indians in their first home game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Chasing 206 for victory, DC collapsed in the final over with three run-outs, including a hat-trick of dismissals, and were bowled out for 193 in 19 overs.
The defeat not only ended their three-match winning streak but also brought disciplinary action against skipper Axar Patel. The BCCI issued a statement late Sunday night confirming that Axar had been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during the game. “As this was his (Patel’s) team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs,” read the official statement.
Axar had a below-par outing against MI. He conceded 19 runs in his two overs without taking a wicket, as Mumbai posted a strong 205/5 after being asked to bat first. With the bat, Axar hit two boundaries early but was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah for 9 off 6 balls. Speaking after the match, the DC captain expressed his disappointment over the middle-order collapse.

“We had the game. I think we had soft dismissals from the middle order, some bad shots. We lost by 12 runs with an over to go, so we could have still won it. It can’t happen that your lower-order batters will always come and save you in chases,” Axar told the broadcasters. He acknowledged that while mistakes happen, the team needs to be more responsible during key moments.
“There are some odd days where you play wrong shots, so I don’t think there’s any point thinking too much about it. I thought 205 was a great target because it was a good pitch and dew was also coming,” he added. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals will aim to bounce back when they face Rajasthan Royals at home on Wednesday.
