Harry Brook was appointed England’s new white-ball captain after Jos Buttler stepped down post Champions Trophy 2025.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Harry Brook as the new captain of England’s white-ball teams, following Jos Buttler’s decision to step down after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The announcement was made on Monday, April 7. Brook, 26, now becomes the full-time leader of England’s ODI and T20I sides, stepping into the role during a period of transition for the team.

“It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me,” Brook said in a statement as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them. There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got,” he added.

Brook has been a regular in England’s all-format squads and was named vice-captain of both the ODI and T20I teams in 2024. He even led the team during Buttler’s absence in the home ODI series against Australia last year. The ECB had considered bringing back Test skipper Ben Stokes to lead the white-ball sides but ultimately chose to promote Brook.

“I’m delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England’s white-ball captain across both formats. He’s been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected,” said Rob Key, ECB’s Director of Cricket.

“Harry is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups and major global tournaments,” Key added.

England have struggled in recent white-ball events, including poor performances at the last three ICC tournaments. In a bid to turn things around, the ECB had already brought Brendon McCullum on board to coach the white-ball teams from 2025, alongside his Test responsibilities. However, under McCullum and Buttler, England have lost 10 of their 11 white-ball matches since the start of the year.

Brook, who made his white-ball debut in January 2022, has played 26 ODIs and scored 816 runs at an average of 34.00, with a highest score of 110. In T20Is, he has represented England 44 times, with a top score of 81, and was a part of the 2022 T20 World Cup-winning squad.

A former Under-19 captain, Brook also led England in the 2018 ICC U-19 World Cup held in New Zealand. His first official assignment as England’s white-ball captain will be the home series against West Indies in May, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is.
