The Indian Premier League’s (IPL) umpiring panel for the 2025 season has reportedly decided to ease penalties related to on-field player celebrations, following criticism around fines handed to an uncapped Lucknow Super Giants player.

As per a report from Cricbuzz, the weekly review meeting between IPL umpires led to a shift in approach after match officials came under fire for twice penalising a Lucknow Super Giants bowler for his viral ‘notebook’ celebration. The fines drew backlash from fans and experts alike, including former India captain Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar, writing in his Mid-Day column, questioned the rationale behind the second fine, suggesting the bowler did not violate the batter’s space and should not have been penalised. “Yes, cricket can do with something different and unique, but the celebration also needs a context. Will we see some unique fresh ones before the tournament ends?” Gavaskar asked.

The bowler, identified as Rathi, was fined after dismissing Priyansh Arya during the LSG vs PBKS match, and again after getting Naman Dhir out in the clash against Mumbai Indians. His modest ₹30 lakh auction price and impactful performances have drawn further attention to his treatment by the officials.

With the new directive, umpires have been asked to be more considerate before sanctioning players for post-wicket celebrations, as long as the gestures remain within reasonable bounds.

The decision is expected to offer players some breathing space to express themselves creatively, though the league may now witness a surge in celebratory flair. Gavaskar also called for more originality and meaning in such celebrations, questioning whether Indian players can make a mark with iconic gestures.

Rathi is expected to feature again for LSG in their upcoming fixture against Rajasthan Royals on April 19. Lucknow currently sit with four wins from seven matches, fighting for a spot in the playoffs despite a depleted bowling unit.
