MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings slipped to the bottom of the IPL 2025 table with just two wins in nine matches.
Chennai Super Kings are enduring a disappointing IPL 2025 season, with the five-time champions close to being eliminated from the playoff race. Their campaign started positively with a strong win over rivals Mumbai Indians. However, while MI have improved steadily to become playoff contenders, CSK have slumped to the bottom of the standings.
The franchise has struggled with poor batting form and also lost regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad midway through the season due to an elbow fracture. Veteran MS Dhoni, who stepped down from captaincy before the start of IPL 2024, returned to lead the side in Gaikwad’s absence.
Despite Dhoni’s leadership, CSK have failed to revive their playoff chances, managing just two wins out of nine matches. Their strategy at the auction has also come under criticism, as results on the field haven’t matched expectations.
Speaking about CSK’s current situation, legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist said the team needs to start rebuilding and hinted that it might be time for Dhoni to step aside from the franchise.

“He (MS Dhoni) has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He has achieved everything that there is. MS… well, he’ll know what he wants to do, but I’m saying, for the future – it’s going to cost me this, I know but perhaps he doesn’t need to be there next year. I love you, MS. You are a champion, an icon,” Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz.
Gilchrist, however, backed experienced all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to continue with the team for at least one more season.
“What a talent! Yeah, ageing but I still see a rockstar as Shane Warne dubbed him way back at the start of IPL. I am just going to go with him one more time,” he added.
