“Even If I Am On Wheelchair…”: MS Dhoni Opens Up On IPL Future

MS Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni is all set to feature in his 18th consecutive season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Fondly known as ‘Thala’ by CSK fans, Dhoni has led the franchise to five IPL titles — the joint-most in the tournament’s history. Last season, he stepped down as captain, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over the leadership role.

Since his international retirement in 2020, there have been constant speculations about Dhoni’s IPL future. As he gears up for another season, debates and discussions are expected to intensify over whether one of India’s greatest cricketers will bid farewell to the league after this edition.

Dhoni recently hinted at his future in an interview with JioHotstar, joking that CSK would continue to include him even if he was not physically fit. “This is my franchise. Even if I am in a wheelchair, they will drag me,” Dhoni quipped. During IPL 2023, Dhoni played through a knee injury as CSK clinched their fifth title, equalling Mumbai Indians’ record. Following the season, he underwent knee surgery and, last year, adjusted his role by dropping down the batting order to become a finisher.

Gavaskar On MS Dhoni

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar continues to back Dhoni, stating that the former CSK skipper still has what it takes to silence his critics. “Why should we even ask that question? Why put pressure on him? Every time people question MS Dhoni, he proves them wrong,” Gavaskar said.

“Don’t doubt his ability. Even at this age, he’s hitting sixes not just past the boundary but into the stands during practice. Age is just a number when it comes to Dhoni,” he added. CSK will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians on Sunday evening at Chepauk, promising an electrifying contest between the two most successful IPL teams.
