Steve Waugh said Rohit Sharma alone held the answer to his poor Test form and leadership future.
Legendary Australian captain Steve Waugh has shared his views on Rohit Sharma’s recent struggles in Test cricket, saying that only the Indian skipper can decide his future in the format. Rohit, who has faced criticism for his lack of form in red-ball cricket, has managed just one half-century in his last 15 Test innings.
Earlier this year, Rohit dropped himself from the playing XI for the Sydney Test during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a series that India lost 1-3. With India’s next ICC World Test Championship cycle set to begin with the England tour in June, questions remain over Rohit’s role as captain.
“It is totally up to him. He is the only one who can solve that problem. He has got to look himself in the mirror and say, do I still want to be captain or play for India? Am I committed? Am I putting enough time and effort into it? It is a privilege and an honour to play for your country. You can’t be complacent or relax,” Waugh told PTI.

Currently, Rohit is playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 and recently returned to form with a fifty against Chennai Super Kings. However, his Test future continues to remain unclear.
Waugh also spoke about the need to preserve Test cricket amidst the rising dominance of the T20 format. “There is stress on Test cricket, whether it will survive because we need it as a sport. T20 cricket is amazing, great for players and spectators and great for sponsors but I still think Test cricket is the very essence of cricket,” he said.
“The players I believe still want to play Tests to see how good they can actually be. It’s the ultimate contest. Making sure that it survives and thrives and is healthy is really important,” Waugh added.
