BCCI Backs Rohit Sharma As Test Captain For England Series | Reports

Following India’s emphatic victory in the ICC Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma is expected to retain his role as captain for the upcoming five-Test series against England, set to take place between June and August. According to The Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee are in favour of Rohit continuing his leadership for the crucial tour.

Despite recent struggles in Test cricket, particularly during India’s tour of Australia—where Rohit Sharma opted out of the final Test in Sydney—Rohit’s success in leading the team to a Champions Trophy win in Dubai has seemingly extended his red-ball career.

“He has proven his capabilities. Every stakeholder believes he is the right choice to lead the team in England. Rohit himself has expressed his enthusiasm for continuing in red-ball cricket,” a source told The Indian Express.

Rohit Sharma Addresses Retirement Speculation

After India’s title-winning campaign, Rohit dismissed any immediate plans of retirement but remained non-committal about his long-term future. When asked about the 2027 ODI World Cup, he told ICC, “Right now, I’m playing well and enjoying my time with this team. The team is enjoying my presence too, which is great. I can’t say anything about 2027—it’s too far away—but I’m keeping my options open.”

Rohit also expressed his strong emotional connection to the squad, highlighting his pride in leading India. “Playing for this team brings me immense happiness. There’s so much pride involved, and considering how well we are playing, I don’t want to walk away from this team right now. There is so much joy and fun in being part of this group,” he stated.

Rohit’s Test Form Under the Scanner

Rohit’s recent Test performances have been a topic of discussion. During India’s tour of Australia, he struggled for runs, with his highest score in three matches being just 10. His last Test fifty came in October 2024 during a home series against New Zealand. However, despite stepping down from the Sydney Test earlier this year, Rohit remains optimistic about rediscovering his form.

“Runs can come at any time—whether in five months or two. I’ve played a lot of cricket and understand how things change every second, every minute, every day. I have confidence in myself that my form will return, but I also need to be realistic,” Rohit told Star Sports.
