Mumbai Indians secured their first win of IPL 2025 with a dominant performance against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Kolkata was bowled out for a mere 116, setting up an easy chase for Mumbai. Ryan Rickelton, who played a key role in the win, praised teammate Suryakumar Yadav for his incredible batting.
Rickelton was particularly impressed by a unique scoop shot played by Yadav off Andre Russell, a delivery well outside the off-stump. He acknowledged that Yadav’s shot-making abilities are beyond his own reach, calling it something only he could dream of.
“I just said to Quinny when he walked past that he (Suryakumar) is a joke. Stuff that I can only dream of. He has played that shot a million times – it is a unique shot and not going to try it anytime soon, but glad he is on our team,” Rickelton said after the match.
“Took my time, couldn’t lay bat on ball to be honest, had to wait for my opportunity. The ball was nibbling around. Chatting to the guys in South Africa, it did a bit and looking forward to maximising on the pace which was offered today,” he added.
Rickelton’s 62 and Ashwani’s Four-Fer Power Mumbai to a Win
In the match, Mumbai chased down the small target of 116 with ease. Suryakumar Yadav hit a six off Andre Russell in the 13th over to seal the win.
Opener and wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton anchored the innings with an unbeaten 62, guiding Mumbai through the chase. Ashwani Kumar, making his IPL debut, stole the show with a record-breaking performance. The 23-year-old from Jhanjeri, Punjab, became the first Indian to take four wickets on debut. His stunning 3-0-24-4 spell dismantled Kolkata’s batting lineup.
