CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said he doesn’t know anything about MS Dhoni’s retirement and is just happy working with him as Dhoni continues to perform well.
Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming addressed speculation around MS Dhoni’s retirement after their 25-run loss to Delhi Capitals in Match 17 of IPL 2025 at Chepauk. Social media buzzed with rumours that Dhoni might retire after the game, especially with his parents present at the stadium.
However, Fleming dismissed the chatter, stating he has no knowledge of any such plan. He noted that Dhoni continues to perform well and remains fully involved with the team. Fleming also mentioned that he no longer discusses retirement with Dhoni, choosing instead to focus on the ongoing campaign.
“No, that’s not my role to put an end to it. I have no idea. I’m just enjoying working with him still. He’s still going strong. I don’t even ask these days. You are the ones who ask,” the coach said.
CSK’s Struggles Continue Despite MS Dhoni-Shankar Stand
In the match, Chennai Super Kings suffered another setback, falling short against Delhi Capitals despite a strong unbeaten stand between MS Dhoni and Vijay Shankar. Batting at No.7, Dhoni scored 30 off 26 balls with just one four and one six. Shankar added 69 off 54 deliveries, forming an 84-run partnership for the sixth wicket. However, their effort couldn’t close the gap as the required run rate climbed over 15.
CSK’s top order faltered again, with Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Ruturaj Gaikwad falling early. The failure to build momentum in the powerplay continued to hurt the hosts. Gaikwad later acknowledged the team’s struggles in both departments. He stressed the importance of sharper starts and reducing errors during the crucial early overs. With three consecutive defeats, CSK will need urgent improvements across the board to stay competitive in the tournament.
