IPL 2025 Rule Change: Super Overs Must Finish in One Hour | Reports

The BCCI has reportedly introduced a new rule for IPL 2025, stating that all Super Overs must be completed within 60 minutes, with the first starting 10 minutes after the match.

The BCCI has reportedly introduced a new rule for IPL 2025, limiting Super Overs to a 60-minute window after the main match ends. Previously, only one Super Over was allowed, with the boundary count deciding the winner if it remained tied. The revised rule now permits unlimited Super Overs until a result is achieved.

The first must start within 10 minutes of the match’s conclusion, with subsequent Super Overs following five-minute intervals. This change aims to prevent unnecessary delays and ensure smooth match proceedings.

“If the Super Over is a tie, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until a winner is determined.” Cricbuzz quoted a BCCI report.

“Other than in exceptional circumstances… an unlimited number of Super Overs may be played where necessary to determine a result,” it added.

Matches to End in Draw After One Hour

Additionally, if multiple Super Overs end in ties, and the one-hour limit is reached, the match will be declared a draw. Batters dismissed in a Super Over and bowlers who already bowled cannot participate in the following ones. The last over’s fielding restrictions will apply. Each team will get one unsuccessful DRS review per Super Over.

The match referee will announce the final Super Over if the one-hour period is close to ending. Any player warnings or unserved penalties from the main match will carry forward. Time restrictions in interrupted Super Overs will follow the Match Playing Conditions.

“The match referee will inform the captains which will be the final super over, if he feels that the period of 1 hour is going to be breached. All player warnings and penance time unserved in the main match will be carried forward into the Super Over. The Match Referee will inform Captains of any Time restrictions subject to the MPC on interrupted Super Over. One unsuccessful review per Super Over for each team will be permitted,” the report added.
