Harry Brook Faces Two-Year IPL Ban After Last-Minute Withdrawal | Reports

In a significant move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a two-year ban on England batter Harry Brook following his sudden withdrawal from the IPL 2025 season.

Harry Brook, who was signed by Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crore in the mega auction, announced his decision to opt out of the tournament on March 9, citing personal reasons.

The BCCI’s decision reflects its strict policy on last-minute withdrawals. As per the updated IPL regulations, any player who registers for the auction and later withdraws after being picked by a franchise will face a two-year ban from participating in the tournament and player auction. This policy was clearly communicated to all players before they registered for the IPL auction.

An official from the BCCI confirmed the ban on Harry Brook.

“An official communication has been sent to ECB and Brook about BCCI banning him for two years as per its policy, which was informed to each player before they registered for the IPL auction last year. It’s a policy set by the board, and each player has to oblige to it,” said the official as quoted by The Indian Express.

Harry Brook’s statement on his decision

In his statement, Brook expressed regret for his decision, saying, “I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters.”

Harry Brook emphasized his commitment to England cricket and stated that it will be his priority.

“I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy, I have dreamt of playing for my country, and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level. With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision. It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.”

The BCCI’s stance on such withdrawals underscores its commitment to maintaining the integrity and stability of the IPL. This move also serves as a reminder to players of the importance of adhering to contractual obligations once they have been selected by a franchise.

Brook’s ban will prevent him from participating in the IPL auction for the next two years, a significant setback for a player who had been expected to make a significant impact in the tournament.
