Yuzvendra Chahal Oozes Confidence, Says ‘I Deserve This Price’ On Punjab Kings’ 18 Crore Buy

Yuzvendra Chahal

Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has expressed confidence in his record-breaking INR 18 crore auction price, stating that he fully deserves the hefty sum. The 34-year-old leg-spinner, who was surprisingly released by Rajasthan Royals (RR) despite a successful three-year stint, emerged as one of the most expensive buys of the IPL 2025 auction.

Chahal, the leading wicket-taker in IPL history with 205 dismissals in 160 matches at an average of 22.44, is eager to make an impact for his new team. The former Purple Cap winner (2022) played a pivotal role in Rajasthan’s runner-up finish that season and now looks forward to replicating that success with Punjab.

“I couldn’t watch the first few minutes of the auction because I was extremely nervous. You never know how much you’ll be bought for or which team will pick you. So many thoughts cross your mind. But when I reflected, I got my answer—I deserve this price,” Chahal shared in an interview with Hindustan Times.

Yuzvendra Chahal Backs His Skillset to Deliver for PBKS

Chahal emphasized that self-belief and adaptability are crucial for a bowler in high-pressure situations. He credited his success to the variety in his bowling arsenal, which includes four key variations.

“I rely on my four variations—leg-spin, two types of googlies, and a flipper. But more than that, it’s about belief. When you’re on the field, match situations dictate your approach. You need to decide when to attack for wickets and when to focus on restricting runs,” he explained.

With nearly two years out of India’s white-ball squad, the upcoming IPL season is a golden opportunity for Chahal to push for a national comeback.

Toughest Batters And Mental Battle

Reflecting on his toughest challenges in T20 cricket, Chahal singled out South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen and West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran as two of the most difficult batters to bowl to. Both power-hitters are set to feature in IPL 2025, with Klaasen representing SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Pooran playing for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

“Klaasen and Pooran are very dangerous. Their power is unreal—even their edges can clear the boundary. I’ve been hit for sixes by them, but I’ve also managed to dismiss them. It’s always a great battle,” Chahal remarked.

Despite their aggressive reputation, the leg-spinner insists on keeping his mindset clear and focusing on his strengths.

“I don’t bowl with a batter’s name in mind. If you think too much about their reputation, it creates unnecessary pressure. At the end of the day, it’s my ball against their bat—I have to win that contest. I’m not the tallest or the strongest, but my biggest asset is my mind. That’s what I trust the most,” Chahal added.
