Kolkata Police Rubbishes Rescheduling Rumours For KKR vs LSG IPL Match On April 6

Kolkata Police on Friday issued a warning against “misleading” social media posts regarding a possible change in the venue of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) IPL home match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Eden Gardens on April 6, coinciding with Ram Navami.

The police statement, however, did not provide any clear confirmation about whether the venue would be shifted. Speculation over a possible venue change intensified after Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehashis Ganguly revealed, as reported by PTI, that discussions had taken place regarding shifting the match.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly requested that the match be retained in Kolkata but suggested holding it on a different date.

Kolkata Police addressed the issue in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Misleading information is being spread in several posts on social media regarding the proposed change in the schedule of the IPL match scheduled for April 6.”

The statement reiterated that the police remain committed to ensuring public safety, emphasizing that all security deployment decisions are taken with the well-being of citizens in mind. Despite the police’s clarification, they did not specify whether security arrangements would be made if the match goes ahead as planned at Eden Gardens.

However, on March 20, CAB president Snehashis Ganguly informed PTI that the KKR vs LSG match on April 6 is likely to be relocated to Guwahati after Kolkata Police expressed their inability to provide security due to Ram Navami celebrations.

Weather Set To Ruin KKR’s IPL Season Opener

Adding to the concerns of KKR fans, the season opener at Eden Gardens on March 22 faces the threat of cancellation due to bad weather.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, Kolkata is expected to witness rain and thunderstorms, with wind speeds predicted to reach 30-40 km/h.

If the opening match is washed out, KKR fans will have to wait until April 3 for their team’s next home game. If the April 6 fixture is also moved, KKR will be left with just five home games at Eden Gardens instead of the originally scheduled seven group-stage matches.
