KKR CEO Venky Mysore believes the team can still make a comeback in IPL 2025, despite winning only 3 of their first 8 matches, pointing to past seasons where they turned things around from similar situations.
Kolkata Knight Riders suffered a 39-run defeat against Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on April 21, continuing a tough IPL 2025 campaign. With just 2 wins in 7 matches, KKR faces an uphill task to stay in the playoff race.
Despite their poor start, CEO Venky Mysore remains optimistic, recalling past turnarounds. In 2014, KKR won nine straight matches after being 2-5 at the halfway mark and added five more wins in the Champions League. In 2021, they had a similar 2-5 record but reached the final. Mysore believes the team’s history of comebacks shows that a strong run is still possible.
“This is our 18th season. If you look at our record, we’re among the top three. Whenever new people come into our set-up, I tell them that in 2014, at the halfway point, we had only won two and lost five. You know what happened in 2014 – we went on to win nine in a row to set the IPL record. After that, we played the Champions League and won five in a row. So, we won 14 games in a row,” Mysore was quoted as saying by India Today.
“In 2021, we had just two wins and five losses at the halfway stage and still made it to the final. Anything can happen in this format – there are still plenty of games left,” he added.
Venky Mysore then urged the team and fans to stay motivated as IPL 2025 enters its second half. He reminded them that inspiration can come from different sources, not just the points table.
KKR, three-time champions and the defending titleholders, are expected to bounce back in the upcoming fixtures. The franchise will play their next match against Punjab Kings on Saturday, April 26.
