MS Dhoni’s late-order role and finishing struggles drew criticism as CSK lost four of their first five matches in IPL 2025.
The spotlight has turned on MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, as the five-time champions have lost four of their first five games this season. While CSK’s overall form has disappointed fans and experts alike, questions have also been raised about Dhoni’s batting approach and role in the team. Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu is among those who questioned the veteran’s intent during key moments of recent matches.
Dhoni has scored 103 runs in five innings at an average of 51.50 and a strike rate of 153.74. Despite the healthy numbers, he has not delivered the kind of finishing fireworks that fans have come to expect over the years. During CSK’s chase of 184 against Delhi Capitals, Dhoni remained unbeaten on 30 off 26 balls. However, CSK fell short by 25 runs, and many felt the former India captain could have accelerated earlier.

His batting position has also triggered debate. Dhoni batted at No. 8 in one match and No. 9 in another, leading fans to argue that the legendary wicketkeeper should move up the order. In CSK’s most recent match against Punjab Kings on April 8, Dhoni came in at No. 5 but still couldn’t steer his side to victory.
Meanwhile, former India and CSK player Robin Uthappa defended Dhoni, saying the skipper has already shifted his focus towards guiding the team’s transition for the future. “I don’t think there was ever a lack of intent from MS Dhoni. Even outside the IPL, I believe he has passed on responsibility to others and given them a clear understanding of what to expect in the coming years as CSK rebuilds into a championship-contending side. That transition is happening, and while we would love to see MS bat the way he is right now, perhaps a little higher up the order, I don’t think the problem lies at the end,” Uthappa said on JioHotstar.
With CSK struggling to find rhythm early in the season, the debate around Dhoni’s role continues to grow louder. As the franchise looks to bounce back, all eyes will be on the veteran leader and how he steers the team through the remainder of the tournament.
