Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of IPL 2025 with an elbow fracture, and MS Dhoni will now lead Chennai Super Kings for the rest of the season.

MS Dhoni will return as captain of Chennai Super Kings for the remainder of IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out with an elbow fracture. Gaikwad sustained the injury during CSK’s match against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati. Despite pain, he continued to play against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings but managed only 5 and 1 in those games.

Scans later revealed a fracture in the radial neck of his elbow, forcing him out of the season. The injury comes as a major blow to CSK, who have lost four of their first five matches and sit ninth on the points table.

With Gaikwad unavailable, Dhoni steps back into the leadership role. His captaincy will begin against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk on Friday.

MS Dhoni returns as Chennai Super Kings captain after last leading the team in the IPL 2023 final. Under his leadership, CSK won their fifth title, defeating Gujarat Titans in a thrilling finish. Dhoni has captained CSK in over 220 games and led the franchise to all five championships. He holds a winning percentage of 58.84, the best in IPL history.

Apart from him, only Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ruturaj Gaikwad have led CSK. The team had handed Jadeja the role in 2022 but reinstated Dhoni mid-season. CSK will now hope his leadership will revive their 2025 campaign after four losses in five matches.
