Punjab Kings knocked Chennai Super Kings out of the playoff race with a tense 4-wicket win, finishing the chase with just 2 balls to spare.
Punjab Kings edged past Chennai Super Kings with a tense four-wicket win, sealing the game with only two balls remaining. The chase looked under control for most of the innings, but the final moments brought unexpected drama. Needing just six runs, Punjab lost two wickets and took ten balls to get over the line. Despite the late hiccup, the win confirmed CSK’s elimination from the playoff race—the first team to exit this IPL season.
Earlier, Punjab won the toss and chose to bowl first at Chepauk. CSK’s innings got off to a rocky start as openers Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre departed within the first four overs. Sam Curran led the counterattack, smashing a quick 50 and stitching a 78-run partnership with Dewald Brevis off 50 balls. That recovery helped Chennai post a competitive 190. Yuzvendra Chahal briefly halted their charge, picking a hat-trick in the 19th over and finishing with four wickets. But Curran’s aggressive knock proved vital in keeping CSK’s hopes alive—until Punjab shut the door.
Punjab Kings began their chase of 191 confidently, with Priyansh Arya attacking early and Prabhsimran Singh playing steadily. The pair added 44 runs before Khaleel Ahmed broke through in the Powerplay. Shreyas Iyer then joined Prabhsimran and kept Punjab moving with smart rotation and well-timed boundaries. At 88/1 after 10 overs, PBKS were firmly in control. Prabhsimran reached his fifty before falling to Noor Ahmad, but Iyer kept the momentum going. He smashed his way to a quick half-century and dismantled CSK’s bowling with aggressive stroke play. A few wickets fell late in the innings, but the damage was done. Marco Jansen’s edge brought the final runs, helping PBKS complete the chase with two balls to spare.
