Travis Head named Rohit Sharma as his favourite Indian batter and expressed his desire to open the innings with him.

Star Australian opening batter Travis Head, who is currently in India playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2025 season, has heaped praise on Rohit Sharma during an exclusive chat with CricketNext. The 31-year-old left-hander, retained by SRH for ₹14 crore ahead of the mega auctions, had an impressive outing last season, finishing as the leading run scorer for the Pat Cummins-led franchise.

Head, who played a crucial role in Australia’s victories over India in both the 2023 ODI World Cup final and the World Test Championship final, was asked to name his favourite Indian batter. Without hesitation, he picked Rohit Sharma. “Rohit Sharma. Opening partnership – that’s what we look after opening partners,” Head said.

When asked to name one Indian cricketer he would want as part of the Australian team, Head once again chose Rohit. “Rohit Sharma. I would like to open the batting with Rohit. That would be good fun,” the Adelaide-born cricketer added.

Head has featured in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although he was part of the Delhi Capitals squad back in 2015, he didn’t get a chance to play that season. When asked which team he would prefer to play for apart from SRH, he mentioned the five-time champions Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians remain one of the most successful teams in IPL history, having won five titles under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. However, in the ongoing IPL 2025 season, the team is being led by star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya. So far, MI have managed to win just one of their five matches.

Travis Head’s Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Mumbai Indians in two group-stage matches this season. The first clash is scheduled to be played at Wankhede Stadium on April 17, followed by a return fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

In the 2024 season, both teams won one match each against each other. SRH secured a 31-run win in Hyderabad, while MI clinched a 7-wicket victory in Mumbai, powered by Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 102-run knock.
