Bangladeshi court ordered the seizure of Shakib Al Hasan’s assets amid ongoing legal troubles linked to his ties with former leader Sheikh Hasina.

A Bangladeshi court has ordered the seizure of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan’s assets, adding to his ongoing legal troubles linked to his association with former leader Sheikh Hasina. Shakib, a former lawmaker from Hasina’s party, faced public outrage after the ex-leader was ousted in a student-led uprising last year and fled to India by helicopter.

His ties with Hasina made him a target of public anger, and he is among several individuals facing murder investigations related to a deadly police crackdown on protesters during the uprising. Although he has not been charged in connection with those allegations, Shakib is currently being prosecuted for allegedly bouncing cheques worth over $300,000.

On Monday, a magistrate in Dhaka ordered the asset seizure following an arrest warrant issued against Shakib in January. Shakib was participating in a domestic Twenty20 competition in Canada when Hasina’s government collapsed, and he has not returned to Bangladesh since.

Shakib Al Hasan’s Political Affinity And Career

Shakib Al Hasan, who was once associated with the Awami League party, briefly served as a lawmaker. His political ties with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have stirred controversy amid Bangladesh’s shifting political landscape. After a student-led uprising toppled Hasina’s government, several public figures, including Shakib, faced public and legal scrutiny.

Although Shakib has not been formally charged for the deadly police crackdown during the protests, his name has emerged in the ongoing investigations. His political connections and celebrity status have made him a prominent target of public outrage following the regime change.

The 37-year-old all-rounder has an illustrious career, having played 71 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20Is for Bangladesh, claiming a total of 712 wickets across formats.
