Virender Sehwag mocked Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s top spot in the IPL 2025 standings, joking that a team like RCB should enjoy the moment as they have never won a title.
As the IPL 2025 season unfolds, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have made a strong start, winning both matches to claim the top spot in the standings. Delhi Capitals have also maintained a perfect record in their first two games.
Meanwhile, former India opener Virender Sehwag took a dig at RCB, referring to them as “poor” due to their lack of an IPL title. His remarks, which quickly went viral, suggested that teams without trophies should enjoy their rare moments at the top of the table.
“Gareebon ko bhi toh rehne de, photo le le thodi der. Pata nahi kitnin der gareeb log upar rahenge. (Let the poor be on top of the IPL points, let them click photos. Who knows for how long they will be at the top). What do you think, I was talking about money? No. They are all wealthy in terms of money. Franchises earn 400-500 crore every season. I’m not talking about that. The ones who haven’t won a single trophy, I’m calling them gareeb,” Sehwag said in a discussion with Cricbuzz.

Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore have begun IPL 2025 with back-to-back wins. The franchise, which has played every season since 2008 without a title, looks determined under new captain Rajat Patidar. Their bowling, often a weak link, has delivered impressive performances.
In the season opener, Krunal Pandya and Josh Hazlewood shared five wickets to restrict the Kolkata Knight Riders to 174/8. Virat Kohli and Phil Salt then powered RCB to a win in just 16.2 overs. Against Chennai Super Kings, Patidar led with a 32-ball 51, guiding RCB to 196/7. Hazlewood (3/21) and Yash (2/18) ensured CSK never gained momentum, limiting them to 146/8.
